This specimen was lot 1103 in Stephen Album internet sale 28 (Santa Rosa, CA, July 2024), where it sold for $336. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL: Maria I, 1777-1799, AE 10 reis, 1792, a lovely coin with some spotting, AU58 BN, ex Joe Sedillot Collection." In the old, predecimal system, 20 réis = 1 vintém, 24 vinténs = 1 cruzado and 1600 réis = 1 escudo. Portuguese copper coins of the 1700's turn up occasionally but are generally in poor condition after several centuries of circulation. This type, struck in Lisbon 1791-92, is no exception.
Recorded mintage: 7,919,000.
Specification: 12.7 g, copper, 36 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM-306.
