This specimen was lot 32170 in Heritage sale 3067 (Long Beach, September 2018), where it sold for $840. The catalog description[1] noted, "Portugal: Maria I gold Escudo 1790 AU58 NGC, Lisbon mint. A scarcer denomination of this series, highly lustrous and inviting. Well-struck and bold, a piece with very little evidence of any circulation whatsoever." This type was struck 1789-96 for the widowed queen Maria I. It is frequently called an escudo altho it is not particularly close to the Spanish escudo in module.
