Goldberg sale 72, lot 5199
Portugal 1741 1000 reis rev Goldberg 72-5199.jpg

This specimen was lot 5199 in Goldberg sale 72 (Los Angeles, February 2013), where it sold for $891.25. The catalog description[2] noted, "Portugal. 1000 Reis, 1741. João V, 1706-1750. Crowned arms. Reverse: Cross. NGC graded MS-62." This quartinho was struck 1707-47. Despite the low value listed in the SCWC, this little coin is quite scarce and expect to pay substantially over the estimate on the infrequent occasions it comes up for sale. This denomination was last issued in 1821 during the reign of João VI. Brazilian 1000 réis were struck 1699-1787; they are generally distinguished by the substitution of a mintmark for the rosettes on the obverse.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 2.69 g, 0.917 fine gold, .079 troy oz AGW, 18 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: Fr-98; KM-182, Gomes-88.24.
