SB820-21543r.jpg

This specimen was lot 21543 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Las Vegas, August 2020), where it sold for $2,400. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL. 1/2 Peca (3200 Reis or 2 Escudos), 1739. Lisbon Mint. Joao V. NGC AU-58. A tough to locate denomination is any grade especially so in this state of preservation and as such should be considered VERY RARE. The piece exhibits a bold strike with good definition of the details and light signs of a handling consistent for the grade displaying light attractive honey gold tone throughout. Upon close inspection a small well placed staple scratch is noticed on the reverse somewhat hidden within the design elements now slightly subdued blending nicely with the rest of the coin mentioned for accuracy. Otherwise this handsome and nicely preserved survivor is a real treat for collectors with a good look certain to see spirited bidding from the specialist." This denomination was struck for Joao V 1723-42 with this, the final subtype, being issued 1732-42. The subtypes are distinguished by slight variations in the king's portrait.
