Portugal 1692 4000 reis
This specimen was lot 30337 in Heritage sale 3042 (Long Beach, September 2015), where it sold for $1,762.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Pedro II gold 4000 Reis 1692/90-(L) MS61 NGC, Lisbon mint. A wonderful example of this type featuring nicely-styled and fully-struck design elements atop surfaces that are a pleasing shade of harvest gold. The overdate is readily apparent and further adds to the interest of this lustrous, Mint State specimen." This type was minted in Lisbon 1688-1706 and was the largest gold coin prior to the introduction of the peça (6400 réis), at which time the moidore was reduced to 8.06 g. The reduced size moidore was struck only in Brazil.
