This specimen was lot 1570 in Ponterio sale 182 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $4,288.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL. 4,000 Reis, 1694. PCGS AU-55 Secure Holder. Pedro II (1683-1706)." This type was struck 1688-1706 and has a fairly low value in the SCWC but is seldom seen. Similar coins were struck in Brazil but bear mintmarks instead of rosettes next to the Maltese cross.

Recorded mintage: unknown but a better date.

Specification: 10.76 g, 0.917 fine gold, .317 troy oz AGW, 28 mm diameter.
