Künker sale 386, lot 5853

This specimen was lot 5853 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €3,200 (about US$4,135 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"PORTUGAL, KÖNIGREICH, Sebastian, 1557-1578. São Vicente o. J. Lissabon. GOLD. R Sehr schön. (kingdom of Portugal, Sebastian, 1557-78, undated são vicente, Lisbon mint. Rare, very fine.)"

Sebastian's death in North Africa while fighting the Moors ended the Aviz dynasty. After some confusion, Philip II moved in and annexed Portugal to Spain, where it would remain until 1640. This type is rare; a very rare variety (Fr-36) shows arrows on either side of the shield. Others were struck at the Porto mint (Fr-37) and a half são vicente exists (Fr-38).

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 0.917 fine gold, this specimen 7.48 g.

Catalog reference: Gomes Se 69.01; Fr-35.
