SB223-74453r.jpg

This specimen was lot 74453 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $600. The catalog description[1] noted, "PORTUGAL. Tostao (100 Reis), ND (1557-78). Porto Mint. Sebastiao I. NGC EF Details--Plugged. A delightfully toned Tostao with fully-struck detail. The noted plug is found at about 1 o'clock on the obverse, but the result is nearly seamless and not at all distracting. This coin offers an abundance of eye appeal." In 1578, king Sebastian of Portugal was killed fighting the Moors in Africa. After some confusion, in 1580, Philip II moved in and annexed the country, which was held as part of the Spanish crown until 1640.

Recorded mintage: unknown.
