The first specimen was lot 4142 in Goldberg sale 41 (Beverly Hills, May 2007), where it sold for $1,920.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Portugal. Cruzado (500 Reais), ND. Short cross. Sebastian, 1557-1578. Obv: Crowned arms. Leg: + SEBASTIANVS: I: REX: PORTVG Reverse: Legend around short cross. Leg: INE: HOC: SIGNO: VINES. NGC graded AU-58." Sebastian's death in North Africa while fighting the Moors ended the Aviz dynasty. After some confusion, Philip II moved in and annexed Portugal to Spain, where it would remain until 1640. The second specimen was lot 73341 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2025), where it sold for $1,560. The catalog description[2] noted, "PORTUGAL. 500 Reis (Cruzado), ND (1557-78). Lisbon Mint. Sebastian. NGC MS-61. Obverse: Crowned coat-of-arms; Reverse: Voided cross potent. A shimmering Mint State example exhibiting a fairly sharp strike and a pleasing blanket of die polish lines over the reverse fields."

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.8 g, 0.921 fine gold, 24 mm diameter; the first specimen 3.78 grams, 25.29 mm diameter, the second specimen 3.81 g.
