(Portugal, John III (1521-57) gold St. Vincent of 1000 réis of 1555-57, Lisbon mint. Obverse: crowned arms; reverse: St. Vincent walks to right between two stars. Very rare, trace of die clash on the reverse, very fine.)
(This spectacular coin represents St. Vincent bearing a palm branch and a ship where he was martyred in 304. After having been torn apart by wild beasts in the arena, his body was tied to a heavy stone and thrown into the sea. The stone miraculously floated back to shore. In 1173, his relics were moved to Lisbon cathedral where they still remain.)"
This type, along with a half sao Vicente (Fr-33), was struck in Lisbon and Porto (Fr-32). More were issued during the reign of the doomed king Sebastian (1557-78). All are rare.
Reported Mintage: unknown.
