Pfalz (1423) goldgulden Fr-1973
This specimen was lot 6118 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €700 (about US$905 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"PFALZ, KURFÜRSTENTUM, Ludwig III. 1410-1436. Goldgulden o. J. (1423), Heidelberg. GOLD. Leichte Bearbeitungsspuren am Rand, kl. Randfehler, sehr schön. (electorate of the Palatinate, Louis III, 1410-36, undated goldgulden, Heidelberg mint. Tooled on the edge, minor edge flaws, very fine.)"
The Palatinate, on the border with France, was divided several times. Friedberg lists this type from the Bacharach and Heidelberg mints. The design is similar but the small shields on the reverse are arranged differently. Fr-1973 has three small shields and a rosette; Fr-1974 has four shields.
