CNG Lissner collection, lot 2049

This specimen was lot 2049 in Classical Numismatic Group's auction of the Richard Lissner collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $514.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU, Republic. 1821-present. AR 4 Reales. Arequipa mint. Dated 1839 MV. In NGC encapsulation graded AU 58. Choice AU, but pretty much as struck. Full lustrous surfaces with just a hint of toning. This coin is very rare in this grade and is the highest graded for the date by five grades. Ex Freeman Craig (7 May 1986), lot 767." The Arequipa mint opened in 1836 to strike coins for the short-lived state of South Peru, comprising southern Peru and Bolivia. It also struck a few four reales for Peru 1836-40. They are not rare but are catalogued at triple the price of a Lima or Cuzco mint four reales. The SCWC lists this coin as debased; we can't tell if that is actually the case.

Recorded mintage: unknown but scarce.

Specification: 13 g, 0.667 fine silver, this specimen Ø33 mm, 13.21 g, 6h axis.

Catalog reference: KM 151.2; C 131.2.
