This specimen was lot 72135 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU. 4 Reales, 1836-M. Arequipa Mint. PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, AU Details. An attractive piece despite the noted evidence of cleaning, with a light uniformly golden-yellow tone and sharp details. From the Pat Johnson Collection." This scarce type was struck 1836 and 1839-40. An 1836/26 overdate is reported, suggesting the salvage of old dies from Lima or Cuzco. The alloy matches the debased four soles being made in large quantities in Bolivia.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 13.0 g, 0.667 fine silver.
Catalog reference: KM-151.2.
