Peru 1836-L TM 8 reales
This specimen was lot 2013 in Sedwick Auction 36 (Winter Park, FL, November 2024), where it sold for $216. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU, Lima, 8 reales, 1836 TM, reversed assayer's initials, rare, ex-O'Brien. Rare, one-year type with reversed assayer's initials TM instead of MT. VF+ with tape-mark on the obverse amid the deep mottled rainbow toning, a few surface hairlines but nothing major. Pedigreed to the John O'Brien Collection, with his tag." This type was struck at Lima 1828-40 and at Cuzco 1830-35 and is common; the complete span of Peru standing liberty eight reales runs 1825-55. Assayer MT is recorded for the Lima mint 1835-36 and this "TM" was likely an error. The manufacture of this type was interrupted in 1837-38 by the North Peru issue.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 27.07 g, 0.903 fine silver, this specimen 26.73 grams.
