Peru 1835-Cuz B 1/2 real
This specimen was lot 1378 in Sedwick Auction 36 (Winter Park, FL, November 2024), where it sold for $1,320. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU, Cuzco, ½ real, 1835 B, NGC MS 65, finest known in NGC census, ex-Whittier, ex-O'Brien. Cartwheel luster, somewhat lightly struck but in a remarkably original state, simply the best. Pedigreed to the Whittier Collection (stated on label, Heritage auction of June 2006, lot 17476) and to the John O'Brien Collection, with his tag." This half real was struck at Lima 1826-40 and at Cuzco (shown here) 1827-31 and 1835. Assayer "B" stamped half, two, four and eight reales and eight escudos 1835-36 only. The Cuzco issue is priced about 50% higher than the Lima product.
