SB824-41365r.jpg

This specimen was lot 41365 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $145. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU. 1/4 Real, 1829/8-LIMA. Lima Mint. NGC Fine Details--Environmental Damage. Variety with inverted ""1/4"". An interesting and RARE overdate variant with an erroneously laid out reverse. Though this Cuartillo is well-circulated and exhibits a dark mottled tone, it retains a rustic charm and clear view of its unusual details. From the EMO Collection." This type was struck at Lima 1826-56. The date is listed in the SCWC as slightly better. All Peruvian minors are scarcer in nice condition than the catalog values would indicate; among the quarter reales, only the 1855 is frequently seen. Many overdates are listed. No normal date exists for 1829 and all have the inverted value.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 0.84 g, 0.903 fine silver.

Catalog reference: EMO-3305.3 (Plate coin); KM-143.1.
