Peru 1819-L JP 4 reales
This specimen was lot 34200 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2022), where it sold for $4,560. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU. 4 Reales, 1819-LM JP. Lima Mint. Ferdinand VII. PCGS MS-62. The only Mint State example of the date on either the NGC or PCGS population reports. This nicely preserved example boasts a strong strike with lovely delicate mottled tone over lustrous surfaces. Seldom encountered in this high state of preservation this handsome piece offers a pleasing appearance with much originality. From the Pat Johnson Collection." This specimen is one of a series struck 1811-21 during the reign of Ferdinand VII (1808-33). As a class, colonial coinage of Peru is much less plentiful than that of Mexico, tho it is more available than the remaining mints. However, Harris[2] noted finding about one-fourth as many Peruvian four reales of Charles IV as that of Mexico, so it is safe to say that this type is scarce. Assayer "JP" is noted for the years 1803-23.
