Peru 1809-L JP escudo
This specimen was lot 1295 in Sedwick Auction 37 (Winter Park, FL, May 2025), where it sold for $3,120. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU, Lima, gold bust 1 escudo, Ferdinand VII transitional ("imaginary" bust), 1809 JP, extremely rare, NGC VF 25, finest and only example in NGC census, ex-Almenara. Rich gold color, with partially weak rims and several minor natural flaws but no damage, the rarest date (two known, by our records) of this three-year type with bust unique to this mint, in fact indicated as RARE in KM without values. Pedigreed to the Almenara Collection." This coin was minted in Lima of a type struck 1809-11 using the "imaginary bust." Hubs from Spain were unavailable, Spain being under French occupation and Ferdinand languishing in a French prison. Assayer JP is recorded for 1803-23.
