Colombia 1809-NR JF escudo
This specimen was lot 40089 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it sold for $660. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA. 1809-JF Escudo. Santa Fe de Nuevo Reino (Bogotá) mint. Ferdinand VII (1808-1833). MS-61 (PCGS). Frosty and attractive light yellow gold with far finer eye appeal than suggested by the grade. From the Eldorado Collection of Colombian Coins. Ex. Harmer Rooke's sale of April 1975, lot 43." In an extremely confused political situation in Spain, Charles IV was forced to abdicate in favor of Ferdinand VII, who in turn was forced to abdicate in favor of Napoleon's brother Joseph Bonaparte, erstwhile king of Naples. Joseph was never recognized in Latin America but escudos of 1808 are known for both Charles and Ferdinand. This type was struck in Bogotá until 1820.
