Sed37-1294r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1294 in Sedwick Auction 37 (Winter Park, FL, May 2025), where it sold for $2,880. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU, Lima, gold bust 1 escudo, Charles IV, 1808 JP, NGC AU details / rev cleaned, 'top pop,' ex-Almenara. Deep rich toning all over, lustrous and choice but with faint traces of hairlines (could be AU 55 on a better day), in any case tied with one other for finest in the NGC census. Pedigreed to the Almenara Collection." This type was struck 1792-1808 for king Charles IV. In 1808, the king was tricked into abdicating by Napoleon, who maneuvered his brother Joseph onto the throne. The Latin American mints never recognized Joseph, striking coinage in the name of Ferdinand VII instead. Assayer JP is recorded for 1803-23.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.38 g, 0.875 fine gold, .095 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-14137, Cal-1104; Fr-43; KM-89.
