Aureo sale 261, lot 484

This specimen was lot 484 in Aureo y Calicó sale 261 (Barcelona, July 2014), where it sold for €850 (about US$1,364 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1779. Carlos III. Lima. MJ. 8 escudos. Leves hojitas. Parte de brillo original. MBC/MBC+. (Charles III, 1759-88, eight escudos of 1779, Lima mint. Planchet flaws, some luster, very fine or better.)"

This coin was minted 1772-89; later issues of this type (1785-89) were struck in gold lowered to 0.875 fine. Assayer MJ is listed for 1773-79.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.901 fine gold, .784 troy oz AGW.
