This coin was minted in Lima, Peru, of a type struck 1763-71. This specimen was lot 25221 in Heritage sale 3024 (Chicago, April 2013), where it sold for $1,410. The catalog description[1] noted, "Carlos III gold Escudo 1770 LM-JM, AU58 NGC, an exceptional example of this small gold type with smooth lustrous surfaces and essentially complete detail. While not significant, a small planchet void (as made) is evident behind Carlos' head. Surprisingly scarce this nice."
