Aureo sale 238, lot 0135

This specimen was lot 135 in Aureo & Calicó sale 238 (Barcelona, November 2011), where it sold for 206 euro (about US$326 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"1770. Lima. JM. 8 reales. Columnario. Punto sobre la primera LMA. Insignificante hojita. Pátina. EBC-. (eight reales of 1770, Lima mint, pillar type. Dot over the first mintmark, tiny planchet flaw, toned about extremely fine.)"

This type was struck 1760-72 for Charles III; for 1770, specimens are known with a dot over both mintmarks.

Mexican numismatists hotly debate which side of the coin constitutes the obverse. Gilboy[1] depicts the shield side as the obverse as that side bears the king's name. However, auction catalogs and dealer listings more frequently use the pillars and globes side as the obverse, as that side bears the date.

Recorded mintage: 2,899,000.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.917 fine silver, .798 troy oz ASW.
