The Spanish colony of Upper Peru produced hammered cob coinage at the Potosi mint from 1573 to 1773, with a major debasement scandal and subsequent reform occurring in 1649-1652. The period 1767-1770 saw simultaneous issue of milled columnarios. The royal or presentation issues are very rare and highly sought after, while the regular strikes vary in price according to the visibility of the date, mint, and assayer initials.

The specimen shown was lot 871 at Cayon Subastas auction held February 4, 2012, where it sold for 90 euros (about US$140 including buyer’s fees). The catalog description[1] noted "Potosí. 8 reales. 1770 sobre 69. V. Casi MBC+. (Potosi 8 reales 1770/69-V. Not listed in Cayon. Almost very fine.) " The second specimen was lot 674 in Sedwick Auction 36 (Winter Park, FL, November 2024), where it sold for $840. The catalog description[2] noted, "BOLIVIA, Potosí, cob 8 reales, 1770 V-J, very rare, ex-Mastalir. Full pillars with complete 770 date, nearly full V at top right, the vertical left side and top serif of assayer J visible at bottom left, also full cross but rest of coin flat and rough (a natural aspect of this period, cause unknown) on a chunky flan, Fine+ with contrasting toning. Pedigreed to the Roberto Mastalir Collection, with his tag."

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.917 silver, 0.798 oz ASW. The first specimen 23.55 g, the second specimen 26.34 grams.
