This specimen was lot 1273 in Sedwick Auction 37 (Winter Park, FL, May 2025), where it sold for $4,800. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU, Lima, gold bust 1 escudo, Charles III, 1769 JM, third bust, very rare, NGC XF 45, finest and only example in NGC census, ex-Almenara. Bold legends and rims, with light toning over muted luster, the bust slightly weak and hairlined, rare as a hybrid bust unique to this mint showing early armor and drapery but older head (note that KM does not distinguish the traditional "rat nose" type from this new third bust), this example labeled by NGC as 1769/59 but the penultimate digit is clearly just a re-punched 6 (no clean-date 1769s listed in census). Pedigreed to the Almenara Collection." The "rat nose" bust of the king was used 1763-71 with the bust slightly modified in 1768 to make the king look older.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.38 g, 0.917 fine gold.

Catalog reference: Cayón-12238, Cal-1333; Fr-31; KM-72.
