Peru 1748-L V 8 reales
This specimen was lot 715 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 39 (Winter Park, FL, May 2026), where it sold for $900. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU, Lima, cob 8 reales, 1748 V, ex-Ugaz, Practical Book of Cobs Plate. Well-centered strike with good full pillars-and-waves and cross-lions-castles, flat peripheries with small spot odd extra metal on edge, AVF with light, contrasting toning, scarce date, desirable pedigree. Pedigreed to the Jorge Ugaz Collection, Plate Coin on page 81 of the 4th edition of The Practical Book of Cobs (2007), by Daniel and Frank Sedwick." Cob eight reales were struck at the Lima mint 1701-46 for Philip V of Spain and became the "pieces of eight" of pirate lore. Assayer "V" stamped coins 1739-48. Assayer "R" is also reported for 1748. The Mexico City mint was converted to milled coinage in 1732-34 but Lima would not follow suit until 1751. This is a late cob, issued just 1747-51 before the conversion.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 27.07 g, 0.917 fine silver, this specimen 26.44 grams.
