Sedwick Treasure Auction 39, lot 713
Sedwick 39-0713r.jpg

This specimen was lot 713 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 39 (Winter Park, FL, May 2026), where it sold for $930. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU, Lima, cob 8 reales, 1747/6 V, cross-of-five-dots at top, unique(?), ex-Ugaz. Nearly full cross, well-centered, pillars with bold full date 747/6 (the overdate very clear), the first and only example we have ever seen or heard of, chunky flan with flat peripheries hence impossible to confirm the king (1747 would be Ferdinand VI but 1746 would be Philip V), Fine with patchy dark toning. Pedigreed to the Jorge Ugaz Collection." Cob eight reales were struck at the Lima mint 1701-46 for Philip V of Spain and became the "pieces of eight" of pirate lore. Assayer "V" stamped coins 1739-48. The Mexico City mint was converted to milled coinage in 1732-34 but Lima would not follow suit until 1751. This is a late cob, issued just 1747-51 before the conversion. The auctioneers hint that, because this example is an overdate, that the die may cite the deceased Philip V instead of Ferdinand V.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.917 fine silver, this specimen 26.21 grams.

Catalog reference: Cayón-10544, S-L22a; KM-unl (44 for type); Cal-unl (Type 60).
