Peru 1748-L V real
This specimen was lot 760 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 39 (Winter Park, FL, May 2026), where it sold for $960. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU, Lima, cob 1 real, 1748+47 V, unique(?), ex-Ugaz. Bold 48 date to left of 100% full right-hand pillar, clear 47 below incomplete (oversized) cross, first example we have seen or heard of, XF with light toning, peripheral flatness. Pedigreed to the Jorge Ugaz Collection." This type was struck 1747-51 for king Ferdinand VI and is the last cob one real struck in Peru. Assayer de Vargas ("V") stamped his coins 1739-49. Assayer R is reported for the other denominations in 1748 but not the one real. In 1732, the Mexico City mint began its transition to milled coinage, a process Lima would not undertake until 1751.
