Peru 1732-L N escudo
This specimen was lot 30265 in Heritage sale 3042 (Long Beach, September 2015), where it sold for $5,581.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "Philip V gold cob Escudo 1732 L-N AU58 NGC, Lima mint. Essentially Mint State with very slight high-point friction evidence, highly lustrous fields and a well defined strike for the issue. The only confirmed example of this date and a splendid and well-pedigreed type coin for this rare type, thus very desirable as such. Ex. Caballero de las Yndias Collection (Aureo 4/2009, lot 559 for E5,800); 1733 Plate Fleet." This type is recorded for 1702-45 and all dates are rare with tiny mintages. The Mexico City mint was converted to milled coinage in 1732-34 but Lima would not follow suit until 1751.
