Peru 1731-L N escudo
This specimen was lot 53 in Sedwick Auction 37 (Winter Park, FL, May 2025), where it sold for $18,000. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU, Lima, gold cob 1 escudo, 1731/0 N, extremely rare, NGC MS 61, finest and only example in NGC census, ex-Almenara. Choice broad flan with exceptionally bold, full, and well-centered details against satin-smooth fields, the overdate weak but certain (possibly unique, missing in Calicó and KM). Note that the teardrop ornaments seen on the previous lots have morphed into plain dots for this date. Pedigreed to the Almenara Collection (stated on label) and to the UBS auction of January 1998 (lot 2604)." This type is recorded for 1702-45 and all dates are rare with tiny mintages. The Mexico City mint was converted to milled coinage in 1732-34 but Lima would not follow suit until 1751.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 3.38 g, 0.917 fine gold, this specimen 3.32 grams.
