Peru 1705-L H real

from the Stack's Bowers 2017 ANA sale, lot 23054

This specimen was lot 23054 in Stack's Bowers ANA Auction (Denver, CO, August 2017), where it sold for $646.25. The catalog description^[1] noted, "PERU. Real, 1705-H. Lima Mint. Philip V (1700-24). PCGS VF-25 Secure Holder. Good strike on a nice round flan with three readable dates. Toned and attractive. Much nicer than what is normally seen for this crudely struck type." Cob one reales were struck at the Lima mint 1701-46 for Philip V of Spain and became the "bits" of pirate lore. Specimens with legible dates bring triple those without. The fineness was lowered from 0.931 to 0.917 in 1728.
