Stack's Bowers October 2025 Collectors Choice sale, lot 74621
SB1025-74621r.jpg

This specimen was lot 74621 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2025), where it sold for $105. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU. Cob Real, 1706-L R. Lima Mint. Philip V. PCGS Genuine--Plugged, EF Details. From the Richard August Collection." This type was struck 1701-28 for Philip V with an interruption in 1725 for the short reign of Luis I. This seems to be the only date for assayer R while assayer Hurtado stamped his coins 1695-1710. Cayón alleges that Hurtado exists for 1706 but we have not seen any. In 1728, the cobs were debased from 0.931 fine to 0.917 fine silver. The Mexico City mint was converted to milled coinage in 1732-34 but Lima would not follow suit until 1751.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.38 g, 0.931 fine silver, this specimen 3.24 g.

Catalog reference: Cayón-8346, KM-31; Cal-384.
