Áureo y Calicó sale 391, lot 1289

This specimen was lot 1289 in Aureo y Calicó sale 391 (Barcelona, June 2022), where it sold for €170 (about US$214 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1697. Carlos II. Lima. H. 2 reales. Doble fecha. MBC-. (Peru, Charles II, two reales of 1697, Lima mint. Two dates, about very fine.)"

The Lima mint, rival to the Potosi mint in Upper Peru, was opened and closed several times during the colonial period. It was permanently opened in 1684 and is still in operation, tho it no longer strikes cobs. Potosi was the only other mint to strike two reales in 1697. Assayer H operated 1696-1710.
