Parma 1787 doppia rev Heritage 3020-24326.jpg

This specimen was lot 24326 in Heritage sale 3020 (Long Beach, September 2012), where it sold for $3,525. The catalog description[1] noted, "Parma. Ferdinando I gold Doppia 1787-S, AU58 NGC, well-struck details with nearly full mint brilliance, an attractive example of this elusive type." Duke Ferdinando was descended from Philip V of Spain and thru him Louis XIV of France. This type is listed in the SCWC for 1786-96. All the dates are rare. Doppia means "double," and this coin is roughly two ducats but is likely intended to be two scudi d'oro. Four, six and eight doppia also exist but are very rare.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 7.14 g, .891 fine gold, .204 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: KM C18a, Fr-930.
