This specimen was lot 42452 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Parma. Doppia, 1789-S. Ferdinando di Borbone. NGC MS-63. Awash with gently watery luster and pleasingly Choice, with strong detail and ample eye appeal. The sole finest example certified by NGC to date." Duke Ferdinando was descended from Philip V of Spain and thru him Louis XIV of France. This type is listed in the SCWC for 1786-96. All the dates are rare. Doppia means "double," and this coin is roughly two ducats but is likely intended to be two scudi d'oro. Half, four, six and eight doppia also exist but are rare.
