This specimen was lot 35019 in Ponterio sale 177 (Chicago, August 2013), where it sold for $182. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Papal States. Giulio, ND. Rome Mint. Alexander VII (1655-67). Dark toned. VERY FINE. From the Demarete Collection." Coinage of the Papal States remains popular today for, besides the strong associations for Catholics, this period saw a string of commemorative issues featuring wonderfully vivid portraits of the various men who occupied the throne of St. Peter. This undated issue was issued with several other giulii (KM 275, KM 276, KM 305). A giulio was one third of a testone and one tenth a piastra.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, .916 fine.

Catalog reference: KM-274; Berman-1904.
