Künker sale 403, lot 1262

This specimen was lot 1262 in Künker sale 403 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €80 (about US$105 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"PAPST GREGOR XI., 1370-1378. Die Münzstätte Rom. Bolognino romano o. J., Rom. [drei Ringe übereinander] GG’ • PP’ •VN[retrograd]D’ [drei Ringe übereinander] Brustbild v. v. mit Mitra und umgelegtem Mantel//+ • DE • ROMA • Kugel, umher die Buchstaben U • R • B • I’ ins Kreuz gestellt. RR Sehr schön. (Papal States, Gregory XI, 1370-78, undated bolognino, Rome mint. Obverse: mantled papal bust with miter; reverse: ball with the letters "U • R • B • I’" in a cross around it. Very rare, very fine.)"

This is one of three different bolognini issued during this pontificate. Wikipedia comments, "Pope Gregory XI (born Pierre Roger de Beaufort; c. 1329 – 27 March 1378) was head of the Catholic Church from 30 December 1370 to his death, in March 1378. He was the seventh and last Avignon pope and the most recent French pope recognized by the modern Catholic Church. In 1377, Gregory XI returned the Papal court to Rome, ending nearly 70 years of papal residency in Avignon, France. His death was swiftly followed by the Western Schism involving two Avignon-based antipopes."
