Künker sale 403, lot 1260

These specimens were lot 1260 in Künker sale 403 (Osnabrück, March 2024), which sold for €140 (about US$184 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"PAPST URBAN V., 1362-1370. Die Münzstätte Rom. Bolognino romano o. J., Rom. A) 1,22 g. ° VRB’ ± PP ± QNTS’ ° Brustbild v. v. mit Mitra und umgelegtem Mantel//+ • IN ROMA • Kugel, umher die Buchstaben U • R • B • I’ ins Kreuz gestellt. B) 1,21 g. ° VRB’ ± PP ± QNTS’ ° Brustbild v. v. mit Mitra und umgelegtem Mantel//+ • S • PET • E • PAL • Kugel, umher die Buchstaben U • R • B • I’ ins Kreuz gestellt. 2 Varianten. Sehr schön. (Papal States, Urban V, 1362-70. The first example: undated bolognino, Rome mint. Obverse: mantled papal bust with miter; reverse: ball with the letters "U • R • B • I’" in a cross around it. The second specimen: undated bolognino, Rome mint. Obverse: mantled papal bust with miter; reverse: ball with the letters "U • R • B • I’" in a cross around it. Two varieties, both very fine.)"

The two specimens shown here are Ber-198 and Ber-199, with different reverse legends. Both were struck in Rome altho Urban spent his pontificate in Avignon, France.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 1.15 g, .833 fine silver, these specimens 1.21 g and 1,22 g.

Catalog reference: the first specimen Berman 198; Muntoni 3; Toffanin 213/1. The second specimen Berman 199; Muntoni 4; Toffanin 214.
