Bologna (1376-1401) bolognino
This specimen was lot 75274 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $80. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Bologna. Bolognino, ND (1376-1401). NGC AU-55. Limitedly handled and bright, the present offering delivers wholesome details and very little in the way of disfigurement. A wholesome specimen." The bolognino was a small silver coin, struck by the city of Bologna, home of the famous sausage. The city was never officially independent of the Vatican but often assumed self rule during one of the many periods of anarchy in the Papal States. In the late fourteenth century, the popes resided at Avignon in France, Rome being too hot to hold them.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver, this specimen 1.16 g.
Catalog reference: CNI-36; Biaggi-371.
