This specimen was lot 33744 in Heritage sale 3114 (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $3,120. The lot description[1] noted, "Italy: Bologna. Republic gold Bolognino d'Oro ND (1376-1401) UNC Details (Edge Filing) NGC. Representing the first gold emission of Bologna, a rare emission and the first opportunity we've had to offer this type. The edge filing is a minor consideration in the context of this laudable preservation, as residual luster still blooms on the flan, gripping the raised details that still impress after a centuries-old lifetime." This denomination was struck in Bologna until the mid fifteenth century; all are rare. As the weight is not given, we don't know if this coin was intended to match the ducat or florin. Silver bolognini also exist from this period. The city was never officially independent of the Vatican but often assumed self rule during one of the many periods of anarchy in the Papal States. In the late fourteenth century, the popes resided at Avignon in France, Rome being too hot to hold them. The Bentivogli family ruled the town in the first half of the fifteenth century.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: gold.

Catalog reference: Fr-113.
