Künker sale 403, lot 1263

This specimen was lot 1263 in Künker sale 403 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €2,000 (about US$2,624 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"PAPST BONIFACIUS IX., 1389-1404. Die Münzstätte Rom. Grosso o. J., Rom. : - BOnIFAT : - : PP : nOnVS :· Papst thront v. v. mit Mitra, segnender Rechten und Kreuzstab//+ [drei Ringe übereinander] SAnCTVS ± (gekreuzte Schlüssel) ± PETRVS (Amboss) [drei Ringe übereinander] Gekreuzte Schlüssel. RR Hübsche Patina, sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Papal States, Boniface IX, 1389-1404, undated grosso, Rome mint. Obverse: the pope enthroned, facing, with miter and crozier; reverse: crossed keys. Very rare, handsome patina, very fine to extremely fine.)"

Wikipedia comments, "Pope Boniface IX (c. 1350 – 1 October 1404, born Pietro Tomacelli) was head of the Catholic Church from 2 November 1389 to his death, in October 1404. He was the second Roman pope of the Western Schism. During this time the Avignon claimants, Clement VII and Benedict XIII, maintained the Roman Curia in Avignon, under the protection of the French monarchy. He is the last pope to date to take on the pontifical name 'Boniface'." Another of Boniface's grossi has the papal arms (Ber-238).
