Palau 2013 2 dollars KM-472
This specimen was lot 40836 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $120. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHINA. 2 Dollars, 2013. 30th Anniversary of Chinese Panda Coinage. NGC PROOF-70 Ultra Cameo. Bi-Metallic issue with Niobium insert." Altho the cataloguers filed this under China because of the panda theme, this coin actually an issue of Palau or, rather, the private mint that holds its minting concession. Other two dollar issues of 2013 include KM 457, 459, 460, 465.
Palau is a Pacific island nation with a population of about 18,000. First annexed by Spain in 1885, it passed to Germany (1899), Japan (1919) and the United States (1947) before obtaining partial independence in 1994. As the US dollar is used on the islands, Palauan coins are all NCLT's.
