Jean Elsen sale 115, lot 1242
Overijssel 1580 1-20 daalder rev JElsen 115-1242.jpg

This specimen was lot 1242 in Jean Elsen sale 115 (Brussels, December 2012) where it sold for €850 (about US$1,297 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"NEDERLAND, OVERIJSSEL, De Staten in opstand, AR 1/20 Philipsdaalder, 1580, Hasselt. Droit: Gekroond wapenschild omringd door de keten van het Gulden Vlies. Revers: Gebloemd kruis. Uiterst Zeldzaam. Vlekjes kopergroen. Ex HSA 6968. Zeer Fraai. (Netherlands, province of Overijssel, states' revolt, 1/20th state dollar of 1580, Hasselt mint. Obverse: crowned arms, Order of the Golden Fleece around; reverse: floriate cross, Extremely rare, some verdigris, very fine.)"

This coin, along with similar tenth écus and fifth écus, seems to be the first fumbling attempt at a decimal coinage. However, the reported weight seems to match that of a tenth écu.

Reported Mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 3,25 g.

Catalog reference: G.H., 215-17; Kiezebrink, 23; CNM 2.38.11 (zonder prijsnotering).
