Jean Elsen sale 157, lot 1127

This specimen was lot 1127 in Jean Elsen sale 157 (Brussels, December 2023), where it sold for €130 (about US$168 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"NEDERLAND, OVERIJSSEL, De Staten in opstand, Cu Statenoord, z.j. (1578-1579), Hasselt. Vz/ Geharnast bb. l. Kz/ Gekroond wapenschild, omringd door de keten van het Gulden Vlies. Zeer Fraai. (Netherlands, province of Overijssel, States Revolt, undated copper oord, Hasselt mint. Obverse: armored bust left; reverse: crowned arms, Order of the Golden Fleece around. Very Fine.)"

Overijssel, along with several other Dutch provinces, issued copper minors during the sixteenth century. This issue bears Philip II's name even tho Overijssel was in rebellion against him. It is also known from Bruges, Antwerp and Maastricht. It was known as a liard in the French-speaking provinces.
