UBS sale 85, lot 386
Ottingen in the late eighteenth century

This specimen was lot 386 in UBS sale 85 (Zürich, September 2010), where it sold for 320 CHF (about US$365 including buyer's fee). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND, Öttingen, Grafschaft, Ludwig Eberhard, 1622-1634. Taler 1624. Titel Ferdinand II. Behelmtes Wappen, zu den Seiten der Helmzier die Jahreszahl. Rv. Gekrönter, nimbierter Doppeladler. Kl. Zainende. Sehr schön-vorzüglich." (County of Öttingen, Louis Eberhard, 1622-34, thaler of 1624, issued in the name of emperor Ferdinand II. Obverse: helmeted arms, dog's head crest divides date; reverse: crowned, haloed double-headed eagle. Very Fine to Extremely Fine.)

This type, issued 1623-25, is one of the few affordable issues from this locale. The county was later partitioned between Baden and Wurttemberg in 1806.
