Ottingen 1544 thaler Dav-9618
The first specimen was lot 5607 in Goldberg sale 72 (Los Angeles, February 2013), where it sold for $2,990. The catalog description[1] noted, "German States - Öttingen. Taler, 1544. Karl Wolfgang, Ludwig XV, Martin, 1534-1546. Helmet over arms dividing date. Reverse: Crowned double eagle. Lovely old cabinet blue toning. NGC graded MS-63." The second specimen was lot 365 in Áureo y Calicó sale 345 (Barcelona, March 2020), where it sold for €320 (about US$422 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"1544. Carlos I. Condado de Öttingen. 1 escudo/taler. A nombre de Carlos Wolfgang, Luis XV y Martín. Ex Colección Rocaberti, Áureo 19/05/1992, nº 60. Ex Colección Balsach. MBC-. (Germany, county of Ottingen, thaler of 1544, struck in the name of Karl Wolfgang, Ludwig XV and Martin. About very fine."
This thaler is a joint issue of 1543-46. The county was later partitioned between Baden and Wurttemberg in 1806.
