Ottingen 1543 thaler Dav-9617
This specimen was lot 31046 in Heritage sale 3105 (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $3,360. The catalog description[1] noted, "German States: Öttingen. Karl Wolfgang, Ludwig XV & Martin Taler 1543 MS63 PCGS. With the name and titles of Karl V. A highly original representative of this seldom-seen series in anything considered appreciable, typically garnering substantial interest when encountered in Choice designations as seen here. A fleeting type punctuated with notable reflectivity amidst a most curious dog-headed mythical being. Wonderfully toned and certainly a great rarity when located this fine and problem-free. Tied for the finest with one other MS63 occupant at NGC. From the Cape Coral Collection, Part II." This type, KM MB51/Dav-9617, was struck 1538-43 with the emperor spelled as "KAROLVS". The superseding type, KM MB58/Dav-9618, was struck 1543-46 with "CAROLVS". The county was later partitioned between Baden and Wurttemberg in 1806.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver, this specimen 28,70 g.
