The first specimen was lot 1204 in Sedwick sale 9 (Winter Park, FL, April 2011), where it sold for $575. The catalog description[1] noted, "Nurnberg, German States, thaler, Ferdinand II, 1625. Choice XF+ with luster on obverse, toning on reverse, oversized flan with minor rim-bumps, emperor's name as FERDINANDI." The second specimen was lot 32237 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2024), where it sold for $900. The catalog description[2] noted, "GERMANY. Nurnberg. Taler, 1625. Nurnberg Mint. Free City (in the name of Ferdinand II). NGC MS-62. This charming Taler delivers good eye appeal, with rich luster and touches of handsome golden toning throughout. Seldom encountered in this elevated state of preservation, and as such, and example deserved of many excited bids." The third specimen was lot 110 in Schulman auction 385 (Amsterdam, July 2025), where it sold for €160 (about US$226 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[3] noted, "German States - Thaler 1625, Silver, NURNBERG In the name of Ferdinand II. 3 ornate rounded shields, divided date above. Rev. crowned double-headed imperial eagle, without sword, scepter and imperial breast. Small planchet flaw, attractively toned. Very fine +." The auctioneers incorrectly catalogued this as Dav-5637 (reverse legend "SEMPER AVGVST·") instead of Dav-5636 (reverse "SEMP·AVGVST·D:P:") shown here. This thaler is listed for Nuremberg 1621-28 and is the most common thaler of the period for the city. Two mintmasters are noted, Hans Christoph Lauer (star) and Georg Nurmberger the elder (cross, shown here). The SCWC prices them the same.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, the first specimen 29.2 grams, the third specimen 28.72 g.

Catalog reference: KM-52, Dav-5636.
