Nurnberg (1630) umgeldgoldgulden Fr-1822
This specimen was lot 3214 in Sincona sale 43 (Zürich, October 2017), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"Nurnberg, City, Ungeldgoldgulden o. J. (1630). Sehr selten. Vorzüglich. (Germany, city of Nuremberg, undated goldgulden, Very rare, Extremely fine.)"
The "umgeld" according to [1], was
"Umgeld war die Bezeichnung für die Umsatzsteuer in Nürnberg. Ursprünglich wurde sie nur auf Wein erhoben, später aber auch auf Bier, Met, Getreide, Malz, Hafer und Salz. Wie die Losung musste auch diese Steuer mit Wertmarken bezahlt werden, welche die Bürger vorher erwerben mussten. (Umgeld was the name for the sales tax in Nuremberg. Originally it was raised only on wine, but later on beer, mead, cereals, malt, oats and salt. This tax had to be paid with tokens, which the citizens had to purchase before.)"
We don't know how the nickname became affixed to this rare coin but we guess the conspicuous "V" on the obverse had something to do with it.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 3.25 g, 0.986 fine gold; this specimen is 3.23 g.
