Sincona sale 39, lot 3162

This specimen was lot 3162 in Sincona sale 39 (Zürich, May 2017), where it sold for 1,900 CHF (about US$2,279 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Nurnberg, Stadt, Halbtaler 1630. Mit Chronogramm. Stadtansicht von Westen. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. Kleiner Schrötlingsfehler. (Germany, city of Nuremberg, half thaler of 1630, date in chronogram. Very fine-extremely fine. Minor planchet defect.)"

This type is not listed in the SCWC as rare. This specimen realized over five times the catalog value. This specimen shows the fad for "chronograms," where the date (in Roman numerals) was buried in the obverse legend.
